The pace changes completely with track 2, Legend of a Girl Child Linda, a sweet fairytale that I think goes on a trifle too long, but nevertheless shows Donovans ability to create beauty out of utter simplicity. For me, things really get going with the next song, Three King Fishers, which sets the mood that permeates the rest of the album that mood being moody and contemplative, slightly brooding and menacing. There is a hypnotic quality to these songs Three King Fishers, Ferris Wheel and Guinevere that allows the listener to drift into a dark fantasy world. In between we have the bluesy Berts Blues, the straight pop rock of Season of the Witch and The Trip, another bluesy number that name checks a selection of characters, real and fictional, including Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. The Fat Angel is another piece of Eastern influenced psychedelia the title refers to Mama Cass Elliott, and Jefferson Airplane also crack a mention. All these avant garde influences are set aside for the final track, Celeste, which is a simple love ballad and the perfect closer for the album. The bonus tracks are also worthwhile. Its especially interesting to hear an alternative version of Superlungs, which surfaced on a later album as Superlungs My Supergirl. The instrumentation in the version here is quite different, and is strangely reminiscent of Light My Fire by The Doors.
